Weekend Links – October 19

I’m cheating a little with the Weekend Links this week. You see, I’ve barely had time to bum around the internet this week. I’ve got bupkis. But with good reason!

You may notice that there have been some changes in the appearance in this site over the last week and in the coming days. I’m trying to polish up the place in advance of the launch, planned on November 2nd at the  Kodály Ensemble’s Fall Táncház.

The logo and banner are almost finished, I’m just trying to get them to work with the themed layout.

So, happy weekend to all and check back soon for more updates!

Happy Canadian Turkey day! I’ve been up and down the house cleaning in preparation for family coming over on Sunday (I even moved everything off our cluttered kitchen counters and gave it all a good wipe – not bad for someone who loathes housework).

We’re also planning a trip to the pumpkin patch tomorrow to pick out our Halloween pumpkins and have some Fall Fun!

Hope everyone has a great long weekend!

Weekend Links

USDA Guts Organic Standards @ Food Renegade – If you strive to buy organic, then this is something you should keep in mind.

Do your children use their brains to think? @ Goat Milk Stuff’s Blog – Something to think about.

Malala Yousafzai on the Daily Show – A truly compelling and inspiring interview. Take some time to watch the whole thing.

Interview with Péter Ertl @ FolkMAGazin – My entire folk career has been influenced by this man. Had to share. (Go to page 16 to find the article or to the back of the mag for a brief English summary)

Music we’ve been listening to

I’ll be honest. This week I’ve been mostly listening to Songza. In my defense, I’m been listening to some old (Neil Young) and new (Mumford and Sons) folk rock. Sometimes, you just need a break from the ordinary.

Another week gone by! Yikes!

We’ve been up to a whole lot lately, and the Weekend Links have gone the wayside, unfortunately. I’m working on the October calendar with some updates coming soon, so stay tuned!

Weekend Links

Beautiful color photos of life in Hungary in the early 1930s @ Ethnographic Materials ML – some really nice shots!

US Military says kids too fat to fight @ Food Renegade – 75% of kids today wouldn’t qualify for US military service, even if they wanted to!

Inverview with PJ Jonas of Goat Milk Stuff @ Savvy Homeschool Moms – What would you do if you homeschooled 8 kids while running a family farm?

Music we’ve been listening to

Utolsó Leltár (Last Inventory) – the “soundtrack” for the Honvéd show of the same name – went back to some old cds. Sorry, can’t find anything online for this one.

Fanfare Ciocarlia – Really wish I could see them in concert

Lemon Bucket Orkestra – just downloaded their latest album.

I have spent much of the past week in a bit of a funk, falling into a tailspin of self-doubt, nit-picking, and just general bitchiness. Not fun for me. Not fun for the Fam. I could go into an in-depth article on the reasons why, but really, that’s not going to get me anywhere other than to rehash just what I hate about my current living situation, having little money, and blah blah blah. And I promised when I first started writing this blog that I would not use it as a forum to air our dirty laundry.

Well, on Thursday night, I finally had enough and started looking around the good ol’ World Wide Web for solutions. Here are a few links that have kept me feeling sane this week. Hope you enjoy!

Articles that have made me laugh or inspired me this week:

18 obsolete words which never should have gone out of style @ deathandtaxes – good for a few giggles.

The Caustic Soda Podcast – Sarcastic and nerdy humor. Warning – adult humor and explicit language. Not for the kiddies (although there are some fun facts you could share with them that will make you seem very hip and cool)

3 Concrete ways to feel more connected and supported in your life @ Simple Mom

5 ways to stay positive every day @ Pick the Brain – great list of simple things to do to keep afloat

Music that I’ve been listening to:

Neil Young – Harvest – For when in need of something mellow but not depressing.

István a Király (Stephen, the King) – Hungarian Rock Opera. You can read a brief history about it here. For when you need to lose yourself while belting lyrics at top volume.

Hungarian Links:

Egyszervolt.hu – Started to show Little Z some of the activities here. Lots of stories and games in Hungarian.

Bogyó és Babóca (Berry & Dolly) – Little Z’s favourite show. Available in Hungarian and most recently English, but also other Eastern European languages.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Well, things have been pretty lazy around here this past week, so I’ve avoided doing housework taken the opportunity to start some of the changes to this blog that I’ve been dreaming of to make it more streamlined and easier to read and post. Most of it is back end stuff, but there are some things you may notice as well.

I’m replacing “Musical Mondays” with a new weekly feature called “Weekend Links”. Musical Mondays just weren’t working. It was actually getting pretty pathetic.

So here is the first of many to come. I’m off to my birthday spa relaxation time. Hope you have a great weekend & enjoy!

Articles we liked

The in-between @ Simple Mom – perfect for this time of year (for me anyways)

Transylvania Hay @ National Geographic – very cool!

Conversation: Balancing Healthy Food and Real Life @ Keeper of the Home – very relevant for our household!

Music we’re listening to

Folk Garage – Got a copy from Szabolcs Hrúz. Jazzy, folksy and great for during the day. Alas, the only info for them I can find on the web is a single video on YouTube.

Folk Calendar – Events and days that are special to traditional folkies

Tuesday, August 20 – Saint Stephen’s Day – Hungary’s birthday!

That’s it for this first edition. Hope you have a wonderful weekend! I’m off for some birthday pampering!
